Is Sleep influenced by Psychological state of mind?

I guess this is rather a weird feeling / observation.. But it is consistent.... I have a strong feeling that the psychological state of conscious / sub-conscious mind, influences our sleep pattern and sleep hours... Just listing down some of the observations ...

1. Sleeping late (not becoz we are partying or working, but wen we with ourselves and trying to stay awake sub-consciously.. like, finding ways to kill time thru watching even crap movies) - I guess this is linked with insecurity and sometimes depression in the sub-conscious state.. and this insecurity is generally related with emotional state of mind.

2. Sleeping for long hours (by long I mean really really long, say 12 hours at a stretch and excludes sleep due to travel, tiredness and illness). This sleep is annexed with fatigue (even after sleeping so long, wen we get up we would still want to sleep). By fatigue I mean, mental fatigue - could be a renounced state in the face of competition and pressure cooker work atmosphere, cluttered mind and this could also happen, when there are intellectual goals but not enough motivation to pursue them.

While I state the above, the opposite applies for people who have set sleeping hours and maximise their waking hours. They are happy, highly motivated with set goals to pursue and have the requisite fire to chase the goals.

So, apart from the tiredness perspective, I guess, one way to set a sleeping pattern if we find it to be adhoc now is, to first figure out the psychological state and correct it first and then go after sleep. :)

  1. Hi, you may find a useful and TECHNICAL info in this presentation by a Dr.Ramakrishnan about SLEEP

    http://www.iimidr.ac.in/iimi/media/images/mchci/Dr.%20N.Ramakrishnan.pdf

He has also wrote a Tamil book about SLEEP.....Our concern of sleep is only about office work/ study groups....but there people like LORRY (National Permit) drivers, POLICE, Night Shift workers who are seriously influenced by the SLEEP Issue....I would say those who are EATING a Heavy Breakfast( 800 to 1000 calories.. 1/2 Pongal, two iddly, 2 vada with Sambar + 1 Cup bournvita will do ) , Lunch with salads ( for 300 calories), 3 or 4pm if really tired have Glucon-D to Super Charge the Energy Level, and light dinner( 400 cal) will overcome the sleeping time issue....The Early morning Food is a MUST to Built up the Blood Pressure..
Also people who have Vitamin deficiency, slow and low eating habits will face the Sleep problem 100% for sure...
Many of my Project Managers used to say have Brandy to Sleep well....That's not correct at all....alcoholic drinks will gradually kill the Nerves system...

Any one who practice to love their problems, develop the guts to face their problems can really have nice sleep like people sleeping in Front of Pondy JIMPER Hospital, Chennai Central, AGRA fort and so on .

For me even my Cash Flow is negative, Share price is tumbled, Job is in its verge I can sleep well with the songs of IR / ARR or chanting quotes of Robin Sharma. In my view if we are having lots of trustworthy friends with positive attitude we can really sleep well. "How many hours we sleep is not an issue ...How SOUND we sleep is a must"

Readers feedback/critics on my comment is most welcome. Also I am sorry about a lengthy comment.
